Our collective story influenced our mission

Our Mission

The mission of The DC Voice is to provide an opportunity for local residents, educational and religious institutions, and businesses to; have a voice and provide a major online presence for all things local to their communities. The DC Voice adheres to the motto that “The only way to change the narrative is to write the narrative”. We use “Always Forward” and “Changing the Narrative” as our main slogans.

Always Forward was derived from the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army (Buffalo Soldiers). Its motto was ‘Ready and forward’. Changing the narrative is a reflection that the only way a people can debunk stereotypical perspectives is by telling their own narrative. This is especially true in minority and underserved areas, It also applies to counter lifestyles that are easily devalued. As our mottos imply, we believe in forward thinking and writing one’s own narrative.

Writing a new narrative takes courage, dedication and new voices to join the mission.

Our History

The DC Voice started as an online news and information source designed to chronicle events, report on local community-based issues, and provide an opportunity for the residents, educational and religious institutions, and businesses in Washington D.C. to have a single, unifying voice. It also provides a major online presence for all things DC.

We believe strongly in our message that “The only way to change the narrative is to write the narrative.” All residents need a voice, especially those that are the furthest away from the ears of power or don’t carry political or financial influence.

Over the years we have come to realize that The DC Voice is also the New York voice, The Cleveland Voice, the Anne Arundel County Voice, The Chicago Voice….. Wherever there are marginalized voices, looking for a way to be heard…The DC Voice will provide an outlet. That outlet will continue to expand and grow.

Our Future

The future of The DC Voice lies with our young contributors as they connect communities throughout the DMV and beyond. We will continue to “Change the Narrative” and challenge stereotypes, biases, and injustices that local communities face, especially communities of color and diversity. We will not shy away from inclusion and making sure every voice is heard!
