Letter from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
Together, we made 2019 a year to remember in the District of Columbia! We started the year in the midst of the longest federal government shutdown in our nation\’s history. During those uncertain weeks, we came together, unified by our values and committed to supporting and uplifting our neighbors. Then, we kept those values and that spirit alive throughout the year. In just the past 12 months, we:
set a bold goal to build 36,000 new homes by 2025;
made the child care tax credit permanent and eliminated the sales tax on diapers;
opened the new Downtown Day Services Center for residents experiencing homelessness;
launched the READY Center, a one-stop shop where formerly incarcerated District residents can access critical post-release services;
graduated the largest Pepco training cohort at the DC Infrastructure Academy;
celebrated three years of the DC Streetcar, enjoyed eight months of free rides on the DC Circulator, and created the Taxi-to-Rail program;
opened Bard High School Early College DC in Ward 7 and the new Ida B. Wells Middle School in Ward 4;
announced that Lidl US will open at Skyland Town Center;
hosted the second National Maternal and Infant Health Summit;
installed new bus lanes in downtown DC and and expanded our bike lane enforcement team;
welcomed the first residents to the St. Elizabeths East campus in Ward 8 and formerly homeless veterans to Walter Reed in Ward 4;
testified before Congress at the first House hearing on DC statehood in more than 25 years;
made DC one of the first cities in the nation to set neighborhood-specific affordable housing goals and released a draft of the updated Comp Plan;
cheered the Mystics on to a WNBA championship in their first season at their new home in Ward 8;
then, just weeks later, cheered the Nationals on to their first-ever World Series victory; and
celebrated our public schools as the fastest improving in the nation.
In 2020, we will build on this progress and keep DC the District of Champions!
Happy New Year and see you at the 5K,
\"Muriel
