WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced the appointment of Jason Downs as General Counsel for the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). In this role, Mr. Downs will report directly to the Attorney General and work closely with the Chief Deputy Attorney General to continue the legal work that makes OAG one of the premier public interest law firms in the country.
“Jason Downs is a talented, seasoned trial lawyer who has earned the respect of his peers and the courts, especially those in the District,” said AG Racine. “We are thrilled that Jason is joining our team. His experience will further enhance OAG’s dual mission to provide the District with excellent legal advice and to use the law to promote the public interest, especially that which impacts our most vulnerable residents.”
In his most recent role, Mr. Downs was a Founding Partner at Downs Collins, P.A., handling civil and criminal litigation in the District and nationally. Prior to that, Mr. Downs spent nearly a decade at the Public Defender Service (PDS) for the District of Columbia, serving as lead counsel on dozens of jury trials. At PDS, he also served as Training Director where he routinely trained attorneys on matters relating to litigation, trends in expert testimony, advanced trial techniques, and more. Mr. Downs has also taught at Harvard Law School and The University of Maryland School of Law. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Baltimore and a law degree from the University of Maryland.
