Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department\’s Fourth District announced an arrest has been made in reference to a Robbery (Force and Violence) and a Simple Assault offense that occurred in the Fourth District.
Robbery (Force and Violence): On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, in the 7700 block of Eastern Avenue, Northwest, at approximately 9:24 am, the suspect approached the victim at the listed location. The suspect used language towards the victim which indicated a potential bias towards the victim’s perceived gender identity / expression. The suspect assaulted the victim and took the victim’s property. The suspect then fled the scene. CCN: 19-165-737
Simple Assault: On Monday, September 16, 2019, in the 7600 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest, at approximately 11:00 am, the suspect approached the victim at the listed location. The suspect used language towards the victim which indicated a potential bias towards the victim’s perceived gender identity / expression. The suspect assaulted the victim then fled the scene. On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, 23 year-old Besufikad Beshanu Tujuba, of Northwest, DC, was arrested and charged with Robbery (Force and Violence) and Simple Assault.
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating these offenses as potentially being motivated by hate or bias. The designation can be changed at any point as an investigation proceeds and more information is gathered. A designation as a hate crime by MPD does not mean that prosecutors will prosecute it as a hate crime. The Special Liaison Branch is assisting with this investigation.
