Black Artist of The Week: Chloe X Halle

Generation Z’s new starlets are taking the music industry by storm, Chloe X Halle. A sister duo prevailing over the pandemic right now. Chloe Bailey, 22, and her sister, Halle Bailey, 20 are some of this generation’s newest singers-songwriters redefining artistry in 2021. The pair are from Atlanta, Georgia by way of Los Angeles. They had minor parts in commercials and movies, some of which include The Fighting Temptations (2003) and Let It Shine (2012). Though, it was the platform YouTube that took their dreams and made them into reality with their rendition of “Pretty Hurts” by Beyoncé. It caught the attention of her and soon after they were on Beyoncé\’s Parkwood Entertainment. Their most recent work, Ungodly Hour, has been on many people’s playlists due to how groundbreaking it is for them.

Their debut album is different from their previous work. The duo focuses on more adult-themed topics like sex and relationships, while still navigating the world around them as twenty-somethings. The Bailey sisters are over their PG image and ready to embrace a wider audience of those who can understand them. One of their songs, “Busy Boy” is an upbeat r&b anthem for anyone tired of dealing with a “scrub,” as TLC puts it. This fiery anthem goes along with their soulful voices. Often times in comparison to their mentor, Beyoncé, the r&b beats are jazzed with an uptempo ballad.

“Do It” is another song that stood out. Their first single, a good choice to get the general public into the world of Chloe X Halle. It was a collaboration with Scott Storch. The catchy chorus went along with their viral summer 2020 Tik Tok dance challenge. The song is perfect for a night out with friends thanks to Chloe and Halle’s voice harmonizing ever so smoothly. In addition, “Forgive Me” is another song that showcases their powerful falsettos. “Tipsy” also makes the cut, beautifully written, with a serious, but jokingly tone in relation to their Fatal Attraction written lyrics and attitude.

Ungodly Hour proves itself to be a powerful atmospheric album infused with pop and r&b stylings. The album captivates their audience into listening to a range full of meaningful lyricism. These women have what it takes to redefine r&b within today’s music. They re-released their album and titled it, Ungodly Hour (Chrome Edition), last Friday and is available on all streaming platforms.
