Black Artist of the Week: Kaiit

Kaiit, a 23-year-old singer-songwriter is making waves right now within the revival of alternative r&b. “OG Luv Kush pt. 2,” has the most streams on her Spotify. It’s a neo soul inspired track,  reminiscent of early 2000s r&b artists, like Musiq Soulchild and Floetry. The fiery rhymes make this song an instant fav for R&B lovers.

The Australian native grew up listening to alternative music. Pink Floyd is one of her earliest influences. Over the course of her adolescence, she grew to have a love for neo soul and jazz. Most notably she grew an admiration for artists such as Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill, and the new wave of neo soul artists Noname and SZA. She

incorporates her edgy aesthetic with her smooth stylings of R&B, making the perfect recipe for a rising R&B star.

Kaiit’s honey-like tone dominates the track with her smooth and sweet vocal arrangements. The hook of the song is a strong point, catchy, yet embeds itself in an important universal message. Listen carefully or you’ll miss it.  “I got no more OG Luv Kush for you, boo\’\’ is a short phrase for how love can sometimes be a drug. A metaphor for the love tirelessly given out to someone who gives nothing in return. It speaks on the themes of realizing toxic traits of someone you call a lover. Essentially letting them go in the betterment of yourself. I think we can all relate to some degree to the song and it’s meaning, whether it’s a relationship or friendship. Lastly, if you haven’t already added this song to your playlists please do, your ears will thank me later.

Kaiit’s most recent single was released in 2019, titled, “Miss Shiney.” She also appears on Kota’s album, EVERYTHING, on the song, “Away Park.” In addition to appearing on MXXWLL’s album, SHEESH, on the song, “ROLLITUP.Her eccentric personality can be located on her Instagram and Tik Tok, where she posts frequently makeup inspired looks.
