February 6, 2020 | Vol. 6, Issue 6
Letter from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
Last week, I joined Congresswoman Norton, Chairwoman Maloney, and Chairman Mendelson to announce some major news in our fight to become the 51st state: for the first time in over 25 years, the House will vote on DC statehood when the Committee on Oversight and Reform holds a markup on H.R. 51. The markup is next Tuesday, February 11, at 10:00 a.m., and we need residents to show up in force, just like you did at the historic statehood hearing last September.
It was particularly fitting that we announced the markup at the African American Civil War Museum, which honors the more than 200,000 African American Civil War soldiers whose service and sacrifice helped us build a more equal and just nation. With DC statehood, we, too, seek to build a more perfect union.
In 2016, we voted overwhelmingly to become the 51st state. Together, we\’ve built record support for DC statehood. Now, I’m asking all Washingtonians: Are you ready to show up, speak up, and help us finish the fight for our democratic rights?
Sincerely,
\"Muriel

New Tool: DCPS Pocket Budget Guide
\"DCPS
This week, Mayor Bowser launched the District of Columbia Public Schools’ (DCPS) Pocket Budget Guide, a first-of-its-kind resource for school communities to better understand the budget process. At the release of the Pocket Guide, the Mayor also announced that her DCPS FY 2021 budget will include a 4% increase to the Uniform Per Student Funding Formula (UPSFF) over last fiscal year’s amount, which will result in DCPS schools, on average, receiving an 8% local budget increase.
The DCPS Pocket Budget Guide is the latest tool for school communities to understand how dollars are allocated across all DCPS schools. DCPS kicked off planning for next year’s budget in October with a student roundtable discussion, a public budget hearing, and two community budget forums. In addition to the Pocket Budget Guide, school communities can visit the DCPS Data Center for a video tutorial on how school budgets are made and see their school’s budget with year-over-year comparisons. DCPS also released a Family and Community Guide.
