(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced nominations to the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
Cora Masters Barry, member with experience in humanities
Ms. Cora Masters Barry has a long history of public service and commitment to the District. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Recreation Wish List Committee. In this capacity, Ms. Masters Barry has helped lead the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center. Ms. Masters Barry previously served as a professor of political science at the University of the District of Columbia, and began her career in Washington, DC overseeing community projects in the Anacostia and Shaw neighborhoods.
Dr. Natalie Hopkinson, member with experience in humanities
Dr. Natalie Hopkinson is an award-winning essayist and critical-cultural scholar. She is an assistant professor in the doctoral program in Howard University’s Department of Communication, Culture and Media Studies, and a fellow at the Interactivity Foundation. Her work focuses on cultural identity, cities and Diaspora, postcolonial history, gender, and media. Dr. Hopkinson has authored two nonfiction books on culture, Deconstructing Tyrone (co-authored with Natalie Y. Moore, Cleis Press, 2006) and Go-Go Live (Duke University Press, 2012), which SPIN magazine named a top-10 book on music in 2012.
Additionally, Rhona Friedman, Alma Hardy Gates, MaryAnn Miller, Jose Ucles, and Cicie Sattarnlisskorn were nominated for an additional term. The Commission is an independent agency in the District of Columbia government that evaluates and initiates action on matters relating to the arts and humanities and encourages the development of programs that promote progress in the arts and humanities.
