Mayor Bowser to Launch #BecomingMPD and Encourage Residents to Become Officers

Tuesday, July 30, 2019
(Washington, DC) – On Wednesday, July 31, at 11:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Kevin Donahue and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Peter Newsham to launch #BecomingMPD and meet with new police recruits at the Metropolitan Police Academy. The Mayor will follow a training module that requires recruits to use de-escalation training techniques and will witness a demonstration with MPD’s K-9 officers. The MPD K-9 officers will be joined by Kylie, a DC FEMS cadaver K-9 who returned to full active duty yesterday following a traumatic injury.
Since 2016, Mayor Bowser has launched and funded a series of programs and initiatives to enhance MPD’s recruitment efforts, including the Anacostia Public Safety Academy, the Recruit Six-Month Rental Assistance Program, and the Employer-Assisted Housing Program. This year, the Mayor invested $3 million to expand MPD’s workforce to 4,000 officers by 2021.
Residents can find more information about the Academy and recruitment requirements at joinmpd.dc.gov.
