We often drive by signs citing some historic landmark or city and really never know why. Why was the question that led The DC Voice to Prince George\’s African American Museum and Cultural Center at 4519 Rhode Island Ave, North Brentwood, Maryland? Thanks to Ms. Palmer, the granddaughter of the first black law officer in North Brentwood, the why was answered.
North Brentwood was the first African American city incorporated in Prince George\’s County, Maryland. The museum, a converted grocery store from historic North Brentwood, opened its doors and allowed The DC Voice to photograph its collection. The pictures below are a sampling of that collection. Take a few minutes on your travels along Rhode Island Avenue between D.C.\’s Ward 5 and Maryland to stop in and visit this truly historic city and museum and appreciate the full collection up close.
Ms. Palmer was very informative as she discussed the history that people are just finding out about. Her generosity was further extended with an invitation to Welcome to Sis\’s later that evening.
