The Monroe Street Bridge – Connecting Brookland and Edgegwood

Mayor Muriel Bowser and Councilman McDuffie briefly spoke on a chilly Saturday morning to mark the completion of the Monroe Street Bridge. The bridge underwent a major repair and now stands as a gateway between these two neighborhoods connecting Edgewood to Brookland where Monroe Street has become the home to a number of new shops and restaurants. This gateway is rapidly becoming one of the iconic landmarks of Ward 5 as it captures the early architecture of D.C. against the backdrop of Catholic University and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

The Monroe Street Bridge was built in 1931 and underwent a major rehabilitation in 1974.  The bridge’s deteriorated condition required it to be rebuilt instead of being repaired. The new structure adds a distinct look to this popular area of the city.
