\’Tis the season to be spooky!
October 31st, Halloween, is the one night out of the year where kids and adults get to dress up and be whatever or whomever they\’d like. Most kids go from one stranger\’s door to another with bags and buckets to get their hands on some savory or sweet treats; while adults participate in costume parties or other festive events with the supply of their own age-appropriate goodies. However, you have those who would like to be at home, with a bowl of popcorn and candy, settling down to pass the night away with scary movies. And in the year 2020, those plans sound more ideal.
Whether you are watching them alone, with family, a significant other, a small group of friends, or a pet companion; below are 10 must-watch movies and binge-worthy TV shows on Netflix for the Halloween weekend.
For those who are looking for family and children appropriate movies, that are adventurous, magical, witty, comedic relief with a few added jump scares; the following are for you.
Netflix Originals 2020 releases (Rated PG and PG-13):
#1. Hubie Halloween (2020) – 5 stars
Halloween\’s hero! “Hubie’s not the most popular guy in Salem, Mass, but when Halloween turns truly spooky, this good-hearted scary cat sets out to keep his town safe.”
#2. Vampires vs the Bronx (2020) – 5 stars
Blade meets the Mystery Gang vs. a group of cliche bloodsucking relators. “While planning to save their neighborhood\’s Bodega, three gutsy kids (Miguel, Bobby, and Luis) from a rapidly gentrifying Bronx neighborhood stumble upon a sinister plot to suck all the life from their beloved community.” Sometimes it\’s not all about getting that macchiato and gelato money.
#3. “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” (2020) – 4.5 stars
Magical, with a sprinkle of geekiness. \”Recruited by a secret society of babysitters, high schooler Kelly Ferguson a.k.a \”Monster Girl\” must fight the Boogeyman and his monsters when they kidnap Jacob, a boy she’s babysitting on Halloween.\”
Personal Recommendation:
With the odd running theme of babysitters and vampires, we have a favorite of mine thanks to the Disney Channel:
#4. “My Babysitter’s a Vampire” (2010) – 4 stars
“What’s weirder than having a vampire that drinks blood? How about acquiring your own paranormal powers?”
If those films simply are not enough, for those of us who need a little bloodshed; try watching these suspensefully thrilling, gory, chilling, heart-racing films and shows. *The following are intended for mature audiences only (16+).*
Netflix Originals 2020 release (Rated TV-MA):
#5. The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020) – 4.5stars
Psycho Breakfast Club: A guide to joining a blood-cult, don\’t try this at home! “Two years after Cole survived a satanic blood cult, he’s living another nightmare: high school. And the demons from his past? Still making his life hell.” I guess it takes the blood of an innocent to get 24 million followers and a blue check.
Personal Recommendations (Rate TV-MA & R):
#6. “Hush” (2016) – 5 stars
This silent movie can kill. “Maddie, a deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears in her window.”
#7. *“Polaroid” (2019) – 3 stars
No photos, please! “High school loner Bird Fitcher finds a vintage polaroid camera that holds dark and mysterious secrets. She soon realizes that those who get their picture taken by it meet a tragic and untimely death.” *Trigger warning: mention of sexual assault.
#8. “The Perfection” (2018) – 5 stars
Did someone say psychotic break? “In this twisty horror-thriller, a once-promising music prodigy reconnects with her former mentors only to find them taken with a new talented new pupil.”
#9. \”V-Wars\” (2019) – 4 stars
A vampire virus! “A fast-spreading disease that turns victims into blood-sucking fiends pits two best friends against each other in a fight for humanity’s future.”
#10. \”The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina\” (2018) – 5 stars
Some would say satanism, others may say witchcraft. “Magic and mischief collide half-human, half-witch Sabrina Spellman navigates between two worlds; mortal teen life and her family’s legacy, the Church of Night.” This adaptation of the tale \”Sabrina the Teenage Witch\” is a dark and twisted coming-of-age story that traffics in horror and the occult. Binge-worthy! Mark your calendars for part 4 coming December 31st.
Hope these movies and shows get you into the spooky spirit. Have a safe and socially distanced night.
