Mayor Bowser Announces MuralsDC to Install Six Original Works in Five Wards

Thursday, August 8, 2019
(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that this week the MuralsDC program will begin creating six new murals in Wards 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7. The new mural in the popular 14th and U Street corridor will include possibly the city’s tallest portrait, featuring jazz musician and native Washingtonian Buck Hill, who passed away in 2017.
“Murals and other street art are a rich part of DC’s vibrant cultural life and reflect the diversity and beauty of our unique local neighborhoods,” said Mayor Bowser. “Promoting public murals is another way we are celebrating and supporting DC’s burgeoning art scene.”
MuralsDC is funded by DPW and works in cooperation with the Commission on the Arts and Humanities. It is one of several tools that DPW uses to help beautify District corridors and celebrate the art of graffiti. Since 2007, the program has installed more than 80 murals – 70 of which are still visible – in every ward of the District on building walls donated by commercial property owners or the District government.
“MuralsDC helps ensure that building walls are transformed into works of beauty symbolizing the city’s nature, arts, and residents rather than being subjected to graffiti vandalism,” said DPW Director Christopher Geldart. “As the artists begin their work, we invite the community to visit the six locations for a live art experience.”
