(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser encouraged District residents to attend the District’s All Hands on Tech event on Saturday, August 17 from 11 am – 2 pm at Lamond-Riggs Neighborhood Library in Ward 5. The initiative, operated by Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), provides residents with free technical support, including laptop repairs, virus assistance, and smartphone troubleshooting. Residents are encouraged to pre-register online or by texting FIXED to 832234.
“In 2019, many pathways to the middle class start online. Through All Hands on Tech, we can meet residents where they live and make sure they have the knowledge and support they need to keep their devices working and accessible,” said Mayor Bowser. “Through this program, we can reduce frustration, expand opportunity, and give more Washingtonians a fair shot.”
Piloted in September 2018, All Hands On Tech has helped more than 500 residents across the District get their devices up and running and able to use technology with more confidence.
“Access to affordable devices and tech services are among the main barriers for tech adoption,” said Lindsey Parker, Chief Technology Officer. “Our goal with the All Hands On Tech initiative is to lower the challenges many residents face when searching for low-cost options to repair their devices. We also want to teach residents how to resolve common device issues for themselves.”
In addition to device repair, OCTO is also working with area partners to provide residents with low-cost internet services and devices and access to free technology classes.
This year, OCTO has held more than 50 Senior Tech Workshops and helped more than 400 seniors get acquainted with their smartphones and learn how to avoid online scams. For more information, visit connect.dc.gov/seniors.
All Hands on Tech is free and for DC residents only. Proof of residency is required to participate. A Spanish translator will be available.
