Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) officially kicked off work on the 16th Street, NW Circle Traffic Signalization Upgrade Project in Ward 4, which will create safer passage for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers through a busy corridor that connects the District and Montgomery County, Maryland.
“All across the District, we’re rethinking our roads, bike paths, and sidewalks to create safer, more efficient passageways for all users of our transportation network,” said Mayor Bowser. “By improving this historically dangerous and difficult intersection, we’re making an investment that will have major impacts for this important connection between the District and Maryland.”
The project will improve safety and mobility at the intersection of 16th Street NW, Colesville Road, Eastern Avenue, and North Portal Drive, NW. DDOT will reconfigure the 16th Street NW Circle to provide traffic and pedestrian signalization for all approaches and crosswalks, including within the Maryland right-of-way. Work will include:
Realigning all existing crosswalks;
Installing an expanded refuge/sidewalk;
Upgrading all facilities for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance including Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS): and
Upgrading signage and pavement markings to align with the new traffic signal operation and signal timing/phasing changes and minimize delays for all users.
“This project is one example of the work we are doing to make our streets, and the entire region safer, under Mayor Bowser’s leadership,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “This joint effort between the District and Maryland not only will significantly improve travel in the area, but reinforces the region\’s commitment to Vision Zero.”
DDOT began work in mid-January and expects to complete the project by fall 2020, weather permitting.
