Agents from the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday, September 12, 2019, in the intersection of 51st and F Street, Southeast.
At approximately 10:42 pm, uniformed patrol officers of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the report of the sounds of gunshots Upon arrival, the officers observed the suspect firing a handgun and ordered the suspect multiple times to drop the weapon. The suspect began firing at the officers, at which point officers discharged their service weapons. MPD members rendered first aid to the suspect until DC Fire and EMS arrived and transported him to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
On Thursday, September 12, 2019, 32-year-old Dennis Byrd, of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Assault on a Police Officer while Armed (Gun), Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Unregistered Firearm, and Unregistered Ammunition.

No pedestrians or officers were injured during this incident. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave, pursuant to MPD policy.
