(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the following statement on Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, granting women the right to vote:
“Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we recognize the historic contributions of women to our nation and reflect on the work still left to do – from guaranteeing equal pay for equal work, to protecting reproductive freedom, to ensuring that in both the public and private sectors the voices and experiences of women and girls are heard and represented. We are proud of our work to make Washington, DC one of the best cities in the nation for working women and urge Congress to follow our lead.
“In the District, we also recognize the fact that nearly a century after the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, and more than five decades after passage of the Voting Rights Act, hundreds of thousands of women in Washington, DC still lack the most basic of democratic rights – a vote in Congress. As we prepare for our historic DC statehood hearing on September 19, today, we ask members of Congress to celebrate Women’s Equality Day by finally ending the disenfranchisement of American citizens in the nation’s capital.”
