Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5A held a Special Meeting on Thursday, December 20th at UDC Backus to continue planning and organizing the community\’s opposition to the proposed Pax Liquor at 4944 South Dakota Ave in North Michigan Park.
The Special Meeting was well attended. Chairman Edwards emphasized that \”we want to make sure we make it easy for people to get in contact with us,\” for the duration of the protesting period. Some residents in attendance even brought poster boards and markers for any residents to create their signs. \”Get Involved,\” was one sign that many at the Special Meeting agreed to use during their literature drops and knocking on doors. That was just one of the slogans, and signs the residents selected. There were several slogans along the wall. After making the perfect signage selection for the protest, the next order of business was making sure everyone was aware of the days and times for the community to come out.
Saturday, December 22nd at 10:00 a.m., the first protest in opposition to the proposed Pax Liquor will take place, and the meeting location will be at McDonald\’s. \”I can park my car and stand like I use to,\” stated Mrs. Smith, ahead of Saturday\’s protest. She also suggested a motorcade with signs on the cars, similar to during campaign time and she can bring her bullhorn. \”I believe that we need to get out and walk Saturday, this is important for our continual survival in North Michigan Park, and I know what it is to do it,\” expressed Mr. Joe Bowser.
Mr. Bowser shared that he had even been threatened before during his seven-day protest for seven years to clean up North Michigan Park prior, but he didn\’t let that stop him. \”I kept going,\” he said. And before closing, Mr. Bowser encouraged everyone in attendance to commit themselves to Saturday\’s protest, \”all of us work together.\” All the residents at the Special Meeting were on-board with Mr. Bowser\’s message, prompting one resident to use her truck to transport those whom are unable to walk but still want to help spread the message of \”no liquor store,\” in their community. Safety and concerns for the youth being some of the critical reasons for opposing Pax Liquor.
