Ward 2 Residents Express Community Concerns About Public Safety

On Thursday, June 11, ANC 2G hosted its monthly community meeting to discuss community concerns and hear updates from city officials. A top concern among community members and commissioners was the June 7 early morning shooting at the 1300 block of 6th Street NW.

Shootings and Homicide

Prior to the June 7 incident, another shooting occurred near the Kennedy Recreation Center. That shooting took place about a block from the site of the June 7 homicide. Commissioner Sheena Berry, who represents Single Member District 2G05 where the shooting occurred, said, “We’ve had several shootings within a block of this area, you know, down 5th Street. There’s been two [on] 6thstreet. There’s been a fatality.”

Although homicide rates in the District are down 44% compared with the same period last year, according to Metropolitan Police Department’s 2026 year-to-date crime comparison, some residents said they wanted more information from city officials following the homicide. One resident voiced concern at the meeting, saying, “We don’t feel safe to walk around the neighborhood with our kids.”

Lt. Stanley Rawls of Police Service Area 308 attended the meeting on behalf of the Metropolitan Police Department and addressed residents’ concerns. Commissioners and community members raised questions about the investigation and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. “Someone died, you know there was loss of life…people have questions about that and deserve to know the answers,” Berry said. Rawls emphasized that the investigation remains active. “The detectives are still investigating at this time. At this time, we don’t have any suspects. But the detectives are investigating and getting all available footage and data regarding that incident,” Rawls said.

Police Visibility

Several residents and commissioners also expressed concerns about police visibility in the neighborhood, saying officers are often seen in vehicles rather than on foot patrol. Commissioner Rachelle P. Nigro, who represents Single Member District 2G06, said, “Let me just say on behalf of my constituents I have asked for foot patrol forever, and y’all keep promising and then we don’t see it.”

Community member David Shay told Rawls, “So we would just request, you know, continued police presence. Anything else that you can do.” Another resident said officers “need to get out and walk. They have to go to the park, they have to go in the back alleys, they have to check on the kids going to school. They have to do all those things.”

The discussion comes as federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and DEA, have increased their presence in the District as part of ongoing public safety initiatives. During the meeting, several residents said they would like to see more visible neighborhood-level policing from MPD, particularly through foot patrols.
