The shooting death of 11-year-old Karon Brown and 19 shootings in 5 days prompted Mayor Bowser to ramp up calls to end gun violence in DC. Gun violence knows no boundaries and any murder, especially those of our youth, is unacceptable. It\’s easy to get caught up in our single-member district (SMD) and lose sight of the entire Ward.
Fifth District Commander, William Fitzgerald frequently attends ANC meetings and does a good job updating the community on crime trends within the area. However, a review of the Ward 5 crime statistics in total is worth doing from time to time. This allows us to see short- and long-term trends within the Ward.
The tables below give a picture of the crime statistics over the last 30 days (at the time of this post) June 26, 2019 to July 26, 2019 and a year-to-year comparisons of Jan-Jul 2018 to Jan-Jul 2019.
Key takeaways:
- Despite a spike in homicides over the past 30 days the YTD in 2019 is the same as in 2018
- Total Violent Crime is about the same (up 1%)
- Total Property Crime is up slightly (up 7%)
- Sex Abuse is down
- Assault with dangerous weapons down
