Living Off the Grid in Plain Sight – Nannie Helen Burroughs Resilience Hub

If you want to get a sense of the impossible in the middle of the improbable, visit the Nannie Helen Burroughs Resilience Hub on Dix Street NE in Washington, DC. The Nannie Helen Burroughs Resilience Hub was the site of the Our Neighbors, Our Health community event, and focused on building healthier, more sustainable neighborhoods. The event was hosted by My Seniors Keeper Foundation (MSKDC) in conjunction with several community partners who came together to educate residents about sustainability and health concerns facing our community.

MSKDC has built something remarkable in the heart of Ward 7. A self-sustaining, solar-powered facility that brings ingenuity and engineering expertise to life. The Nannie Helen Burroughs Resilience Hub is a technical marvel, and a powerful example of what vision and expertise can achieve for a community.

Mushin “Bo” Boeluther Umer, president of MSKDC, led tours of this amazing facility. Joining him for the event were Robin Lewis, director for climate equity at Interfaith Power & Light DMV; Tene Lewis, CEO of Warriors Empowering District Communities and volunteer leader for the Campaign to Reduce Lead Exposure and Asthma; representatives from the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Rhythm Accents providing powerful jazz rhythms; and others as the evening progressed into the night.

Watch the video on our YouTube channel for a closer look at the hub and the community partners working together to build a healthier, more sustainable community.
